BLACK DYNAMITE! BLACK DYNAMITE! BLACK DYNAMITE!

I waited over a year to see this film which brings back a genre that many won’t admit they enjoy, the blaxploitation film. This film pokes fun at the genre but never strays very much from what the genre meant then. Kung Fu, Conspiracy, Romance, Awkward Acting, This film has it all!

Black Dynamite starts Michael Jai White, and exceptional actor who has been in big productions that were considered disasters (IE. SPAWN), and has been cut from larger film for reason unknown, (deleted scene from Kill Bill Vol. 2). The guy has had a hard time finding the right light beyond his martial art skills. Thankful this film shows the guy has comedic timing and skills to usher in this genre again.

Now I know many will skip this film just because it might not excite you, but to under stand this film you must have appreciation of other films like Coffy, and Super Fly. You also must like Quentin Tarantino films which most of his films find roots in, (Pulp Ficiton and Jackie Brown mostly), and even films like I’M GONNA GET YOU SUCKA’ a parody of blaxploitation films.

This film walks a fine line between parody and actual genre. I think thats why the film works. It reels you in with the parody effect then you realize that they really try to make it like a film shot in the 1970’s.

I laughed out loud many times during this film. I expect many would. My favorite parts were when people came out of character and realize what they said was not suppose to be part of the film. Of course this is written into the film, but it makes for comedy gold.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
head to your cineplex or get on dvd blu ray soon.

Remember… I am smiling.

This film was shot and edited in 24 hour, alot of prep went into this film and I think it came together great. We used alot of cheap methods such as fish tanks to shoot some of the scenes. I really think the cast clicked well. I really enjoy this piece. enjoy!

Starring Jackie Haggerty, Philip Eggers and Matt Hayes
Directed by Danielle Hoffman and Jeremy Hyler
Written by Danielle Hoffman and Jeremy Hyler

Official Selection of:
Carolina Film and Video Festival 2009

From Cineobscure.com; Chad Callaghan :

What do you get when you mix ’shrooms with editing lab?

A) I don’t know but the establishing shot is a flashback scene
B) Non-linear hallucinogenic goodness
C) A rough cut that needs to be tweaked…and three characters who are
D) The short film TICK, TOCK, TRIP!
E) All of the above

Hopefully you chose E. If not – do yourself a favor and check out Danielle Hoffman & Jeremy Hylers hilarious little film. Shot and edited in only 24 hours, TICK, TOCK, TRIP! acts as a showcase for the sheer talent of the filmmakers who helmed it.

The story follows the journey of film students Chuck, Suzie, and Tom through one particularly trippy editing lab that they are not soon to forget. Though their day starts like any other on campus, they soon find themselves in a bizarre state that would make Lewis Carroll shed a single tear of pride.

So be sure to screen this most original flick. And hurry…you may just get hit with another pop quiz.
